One of five volcanoes which make up the big island of Hawaii, Kilauea is situated on the southeastern flank of the Mauna Loa Volcano and is one of the world's most active. Extending into the earth for over 35 mi (60 km), its name means "spewing" in Hawaiian and refers to the volcano's frequent eruptions.
The Mauna Loa Volcano, meaning "Long Mountain" in Hawaiian, is the largest volcano on the planet as well as one of its most active. Rising more than two and a half mi (4 km) above sea level and with long, gradual slopes, the volcano covers almost half of the big island of Hawaii and tends to have mostly non-explosive eruptions.
